It takes a while after gastric sleeve surgery to return to eating a regular diet. After all, the stomach is now much smaller. You’ll start with clear liquids, graduate to all liquids, then go on to a soft foods diet until your stomach heals. After that, you can consider trying a specific diet to lose weight that meets gastric sleeve food guidelines. Here are my recommendations regarding dieting after gastric sleeve.
Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet is one of the best diets for gastric sleeve patients to try. I recommend high-protein, low-carb and low-sugar diets after gastric sleeve. The Atkins diet meets all of these requirements.
Developed as a heart-healthy diet in the 1960s by Dr. Robert Atkins, the eating methods bearing his name have stood the test of time. Not only is the diet designed to help people lose weight and maintain that weight loss but it can also help reduce hypertension and improve metabolic syndrome.
Paleo Diet
Ancient people in the Paleolithic era obviously didn’t consume processed food. They lived on fish, meat and simple plant foods. The idea that any foods requiring farming (e.g., wheat) contribute to modern diseases is the paleo diet premise.
The downside of the paleo diet is its heavy reliance on meat. Down the line, that may result in an increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It also makes it an exceptionally expensive diet. The nuts and seeds emphasis is another issue for gastric sleeve patients, who may want to avoid these hard-to-digest items.
Keto Diet
Because the ketogenic (keto) diet focuses on high fats, moderate amounts of protein and low carbohydrates, it is not a suitable choice for gastric sleeve patients.
The high fat levels are the issue with the keto diet after bariatric surgery. Fats become the body’s primary source of fuel, rather than protein. Along with providing less protein than gastric sleeve patients need, the keto diet limits fiber-rich food.
Gastric sleeve patients should consume low to moderate levels of daily fat. The amount of fat in the keto diet can also aggravate acid reflux. Without sufficient fiber, gastric sleeve patients may have trouble absorbing nutrients and suffer from diarrhea and dumping syndrome.
Whole30 Diet
Because the Whole30 diet is not a weight loss diet per se, it’s not the best choice for someone for whom weight loss is the primary aim. This diet is based on identifying foods the individual can digest most easily. Similar to the paleo diet, the Whole30 diet features fish, lean meats, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.
While all of the diets mentioned require planning and preparation, the Whole30 Diet requires even more time and attention.
